About

Black Birch Canyon Overlook is a roadside pullout along Bryce Canyon's 18-mile Southern Scenic Drive, located at approximately mile marker 16.5 and sitting at roughly 8,750 feet elevation. It's one of the quieter stops on the drive — fewer visitors make the full push past Agua Canyon — which means you're more likely to have the view to yourself.

What You See

Looking south, the viewpoint frames a bowl-shaped amphitheater filled with hoodoos and a dense floor of pine and fir. To the southeast on clear days, Navajo Mountain is visible on the horizon — a prominent landmark that anchors the scale of the Colorado Plateau. Looking east, the Paria Valley opens up alongside the upper terraces of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It's a notably different composition than the classic northern viewpoints like Sunrise or Bryce Point, which look down into denser hoodoo fields.

Practical Notes

  • The overlook is wheelchair accessible with a paved pullout area
  • No trail access from this point — it is a vista only
  • A quick stop: plan 5–10 minutes unless you're photographing
  • Best light falls in the afternoon when the canyon walls face west
  • The name is a misnomer — black birch doesn't grow in Utah; the trees here are likely quaking aspen

Combine this stop with Ponderosa Canyon (a short drive south) and Agua Canyon (just north) for an efficient tour of the southern end of the scenic drive.

It's rather boring; you can skip this if there are no seats available.
