About

The Hogback is a stretch of Utah Scenic Byway 12 between Escalante and Boulder where the road narrows to the width of a sandstone ridge, with drop-offs of roughly 400 feet on either side and no guardrails. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and opened in 1940 as the 'Million Dollar Road to Boulder,' it gave Boulder its first year-round mail delivery and remains one of the most dramatic segments of a byway that runs from Red Canyon and Bryce Canyon through Grand Staircase-Escalante to Capitol Reef.

The pics I took don't do it justice but wow...amazing!!! There is a little section that is just the two lane road and a steep drop off on either side...incredible. State Road 12 goes through the Dixie National Forest as well. This is a must drive to see real natural beauty!!!

Highway driving does not get better than this. The hogback is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of the US highway system. You're surrounded on both sides by steep cliffs of stunning sandstone as far as the eye can see. I was fortunate enough to drive through this area by accident just as the sunset started and immediately pulled over to soak in the view. It's an experience I'll never forget.

Visited on 9.22.2025. Spectacular views from this vantage points. Just be careful this stretch of road is very narrow with no guardrails.

We travelled this road 7 years ago and the part between Escalante and boulder is a great scenic road running on top of a rigde where there really are no shoulders on the road and the drive needs your full attention. It was a great experience of a scenic southern Grand Staircase nature highway.

This is a spectacular road and it is difficult to imagine how it was built. The road seems to go off the top of the world and wind through The canyons dropping thousands of feet along the way(as I recall). The grades are surprisingly steep and as high as any I have seen in the United States. We stopped at every location that we could and found unique information at a rest stop. There are surprising views and it is easy to see a lot of Territory between the Henry mountains and Navajo Mountain, which is in on the Arizona border
