Day Hike

Basalt

A lava-rock stretch inside the Navajo Lake Loop

(0)
Duck Creek Village, UT

About

"Basalt" refers to the lava-field stretch of the Navajo Lake Loop trail system near Duck Creek Village, not a standalone hike. On the east side of Navajo Lake, the singletrack crosses a genuine basalt field — a patch of jagged black volcanic rock left over from Dixie National Forest's long history of lava flows, with a short, technical climb through the crushed cinder underfoot.

It's a distinctive quarter-mile or so within the larger loop rather than a destination on its own: hikers and mountain bikers pass through it as part of the roughly 11-mile circuit around Navajo Lake. If you're planning around this section specifically, treat it as one notable stretch of that longer route rather than a separate trailhead-to-summit hike, and expect uneven volcanic rock underfoot rather than smooth tread.
