Tropic, UT

About

Bryce Pioneer Village occupies 13 acres in Tropic, roughly 10 minutes from the Bryce Canyon National Park entrance. The property mixes standard motel rooms with historic Western cabins — the cabins are originals, built inside the park from 1925 to 1927 by the Union Pacific Railroad and designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood (the same architect behind Yosemite's Ahwahnee Hotel). They were relocated to this site in the mid-1980s, which gives the property a genuine piece of Bryce Canyon history that you won't find at a generic roadside motel.

Accommodations

Room types span single-queen motel rooms, double full-size and double-queen motel rooms, and three-queen cabins that work well for families or groups. The continental breakfast is included. The on-site Showdowns Restaurant serves meals and hosts live country-western music on select evenings. An outdoor pool rounds out the main amenities.

On-Site Activities

The property has enough space for soccer, volleyball, chess and card tables under gazebos, and a nightly campfire with marshmallows — a low-key way to wind down after a park day. An RV park with campsites is also on the grounds.

Location Notes

Tropic sits on the east side of Bryce Canyon along UT-12. The drive to Bryce Canyon's entrance is straightforward, and the town has a handful of other restaurants and shops within walking distance of the property.

A true gem in the area. There's many options for staying in or around Bryce canyon, but I can't recommend this one enough. We stayed in a cozy 2 person duplex cabin, with its own backyard area, chairs, fire pit and hammock. The rooms were spacious enough, with parking right next to the rooms. The restaurant on site had live music and good food, and the property surrounding it was beautiful with big trees, lots of places to sit and relax, a pool, gym, and laundry. The price was very good, probably the best in the area for what you get, and I was able to book last second. My only complaints were that the beds were a bit lumpy, they hurt our hips a bit. And the rooms could do with a second, probably sheer curtain. The only option you get is fully closed, or fully open, and people can see right into the the room. I'd have liked to be able to still see the sunlight outside without worrying about people seeing in so clearly. Otherwise it was a great experience and we would probably book again.

SO glad I found this place! Incredibly cute rooms and grounds, nice gift shop, and a restaurant right in the middle. Had a video call scheduled for one night of my stay, and their wifi was more than enough to keep up. Friendly staff, pool, tons of outdoor seating and a fire pit. Conveniently close to Bryace Canyon Park, which is stunning. Definitely staying here if I'm ever in that neck of the woods again!

First of all, we and 3 other parties had to stand outside waiting for someone to open the door to the lobby area to check in. Someone had put up a note stating they would be back soon - but didn't say when. After arriving and unlocking the door, she made no, as in zero, apologies. The room looked like it had last be updated in the 1980's. The 24" TV (YES it's that small!) had no modern stations. Who doesn't offer cable at a minimum? Is a smart TV that expensive? The room was tiny and had no closet. We had to wait 30 minutes to eat at their restaurant. The wait got up to over 45 minutes. How does that make sense? They brag about their great restaurant and how convenient it is to be located on the property, but all evening there was a minimum 30-minute wait.

This was by far one of my favorite stays on my trip across the country! It is by no means luxury, but the vibe is superior. Currently planning another trip after 4 years, and I’m making sure I stay here again!

The rooms are very tiny with beds too firm for me. The property is great, though, with a pool and hot tub, giant chess board, fire pits, a big bench swing circle, on site restaurant, books and games to play. Great home base for Bryce National Park. Do NOT get breakfast at the place in the gas station next door. It was TERRIBLE.
